Depending on who you ask, coconut oil should either be avoided or embraced in moderation. The main point of conflict is its high saturated fat content; unlike other plant-based oils, coconut oil is primarily a saturated fat. Not everyone agrees that such a concentrated source of saturated fat is a no-go for health, but some experts, including the American Heart Association, argue that replacing foods that are high in saturated fat with healthier options can lower blood cholesterol levels and improve lipid profiles. Still, science is starting to suggest that not all saturated fats are bad for you.

My article is just a summary of what scientists know right now. Knowledge will evolve–that’s a good thing, right? If you want to make a serious decision about what oil is healthiest for you, don’t take my word on it — talk to a doctor or dietitian. A lot of the information about nutrition peddled on the web is from manufacturers or people who work for them, and from fake experts with lots of letters after their names. Read a variety of trustworthy sources and don’t be suckered by sweeping claims. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
The human body also produces cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids, in a bodily system known as the endocannabinoid system (or ECS). The ECS promotes homeostasis by regulating a wide range of functions, including motor skills, mood, appetite, and sleep. As we age, our ECS produces fewer endocannabinoids; they may also decrease due to physical injury or disease. Replenishing depleted endocannabinoids with phytocannabinoids like CBD can help restore balance to the body.
Still, as the saying goes, absence of evidence isn’t necessarily evidence of absence, and there’s a reason we don’t have a ton of solid research on CBDs yet — “to study it, we need a good source, ” said Ziva Cooper, who is an associate professor at Columbia University and was on the National Academies committee. CBD is hard to get because it’s still technically a Schedule I drug, which limits its availability, Cooper said.

Canola oil. Canola oil is low in saturated fat, Haas says. Unhealthy saturated fat is solid at room temperature and comes mostly from animal products like meat and dairy. In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided that manufacturers could claim that 1 1/2 tablespoons of canola oil a day may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease when used instead of saturated fat. Canola oil has a higher smoke point than olive oil and can be used safely for cooking at high temperatures. It doesn’t have as much flavor as some other vegetable and seed oils, though, so you may not want to use it in recipes like salad dressings where you want the oil to add some flavor, Warren says.
Phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil has a higher concentration of CBD compared to other cannabinoids. When ingested, CBD interacts with our body’s endocannabinoid system. This triggers the body to consume more of its own cannabinoids, which directly influences our immune system—where the majority of CBD receptors are found. This helps reduce inflammation and pain and promotes a healthier immune system.
The smoke point is the temperature that causes oil to start smoking, which produces toxic fumes and harmful free radicals (the stuff we’re trying to avoid). Because of their chemical makeup, different oils have different smoke points. So some oils are better suited for cooking at higher temperatures than others. A good rule of thumb is that the more refined the oil, the higher the smoke point. Vegetable, peanut and sesame oils have the highest smoke points. Note: Smoke point relates only to fresh oil; oil that is used for cooking and then strained and re-used loses its integrity.
